藻类植物的一大类，生长于淡水或海水之中，为单细胞植物。细胞中含有叶绿素和褐色的色素，细胞壁含有硅酸。因古代的硅藻沉积于水底而形成石油和硅藻土层。 作为单细胞或群体，大量分布于淡水和海洋中，是浮游生物的重要组成部分，同时亦分布于土壤中。细胞壁含有丰富的硅(称为细胞壳)，大多有美丽的花纹，由相互扣合的两瓣组成，形似圆形药丸盒。细胞壳化石构成多孔岩石，称为硅藻土，用以制造过滤器、绝缘体、磨料等。
