短路过渡是指属于接触渡的一种，熔滴经电弧空间自由飞行，焊丝端头和熔池之间不发生直接接触。焊接电弧很短，熔滴尚未长大就与熔池接触，形成短路。电弧瞬间熄灭，短路电流产生较大的电磁收缩力及表面张力，使熔滴很快过渡到熔池，电弧又重新点燃，如此不断重复，就形成了短路过渡过程。短路过渡的电弧稳定、飞溅小。这种过渡形式广泛用于CO2气体保护焊的薄板焊接中。在短路过渡焊接过程中，短路电流上升速度、短路电流的峰值等参数，对焊接稳定性有很大影响，因而，焊接电源要有适当的稳定性，还要有一定的动特性。
