相对生长指的是以生物体某一方 面的生长作为尺度来预知判断其他方面的生长情况，(例如，生物体整体生长和部分生长，身高和体重，某一部分的生长与其他部分的生长)，所以就生长而言，它是相对的。以时间为衡量标准判断生长那就是绝对生长。
