在给水泵的压头作用下，给水依次经过加热、蒸发和过热等受热面而生成具有一定压力和温度的过热蒸汽，这种锅炉即为直流锅炉。直流锅炉运行时，给水中的杂质除部分随蒸汽带走外，其余都沉积在受热面上；机组停用时，内部还会由于腐蚀而生成氧化铁。为了清除这些污垢，点火前要用一定温度的除氧水进行循环清洗。
