监生是国子监监生员的简称，明清两代取得入国子监读书资格的人称国子监生员，其中依靠父、祖官位入监的称荫监，由皇帝特许入监的称恩监，因捐纳财物入监的称捐监，监生可参加乡试。国子监是明清两代的最高学府，照规定必须贡生或荫生才有资格入监读书，所谓荫生即依靠父祖的官位而取得入监的官僚子弟，此种荫生亦称荫监。监生也可以用钱捐到的，这种监生，通称例监，亦称捐监。
