以美国盆岭区为原型命名的大型伸展构造。反映了上地壳相对于中、下地壳的大规模拆离。美国西部从盐湖城向西延展750千米范围内的盆岭区,地形上表现为不对称的狭长山岭和盆地相间排列,山岭西坡缓倾、东坡陡峭。反射地震剖面证实下面存在一向西倾的低角度拆离断层,向下至少深入12～15千米。沿断层的运动使上盘产生一系列由倾向相反的高角度断层组成的掀斜断块,盆岭区的地形就是这些断块转动的结果。因此反映了大规模的伸展活动。对总伸展幅度的估算认为,其面积已达原来面积的大约一倍。
