白犀（学名：Ceratotherium simum）：犀科白犀属的一种动物，又叫白犀牛、方吻犀、宽吻犀等，体大威武，形态奇特，截至2013年，据IUCN非洲犀牛专家组调查，大约有20405只白犀牛存活，是现存数量最多的一种犀牛。白犀是现存犀牛中最进化、最聪明、最晚出现（早更新世200万前）的，智力是现存犀牛中最高的，大脑为重达360克。 白犀牛的名称来自于荷兰语“weit”，意思为“wide” （宽平），针对它们宽平的嘴唇而言，后来被人误称为“white” （白色），故称“白犀牛”，又名“方嘴犀”。 白犀牛可分为北部白犀（Ceratotherium simum cottoni）和南部白犀（Ceratotherium simum simum）两个亚种，南部白犀主要分布于南非、纳米比亚、津巴布韦等国，尚存在两万头左右。曾经分布于肯尼亚等东、中非地区的北部白犀数量已仅存五头，世界上最后一只幸存的雄性北部白犀“苏丹”已经被切除犀角24小时守护起来，守护它的是4名全副武装的武装警察，这一做法是为了挽救这一亚种。
