电机车是轨道车辆运输的一种牵引设备，动力是利用牵引电机驱动车轮转动，借助车轮与轨面间的摩擦力，使机车在轨道上运行。这种运行方式，它的牵引力不仅受牵引电机（或内燃机）功率的限制，还受车轮与轨面间的摩擦制约。机车运输能行驶的坡度有限制，运输轨道坡度一般为3‰，局部坡度不能超过30‰。其按结构分类有架线式电机车和蓄电池电机车。
