“电子照相”这一术语，其内容未必是固定的，由于受到技术的进步以及学会的观点或研究人员的个人主观看法的影响，其含义可能发生变化，一般说来，它是将光、热、放射线、静电、磁、电化学等物理及化学现象组合起来；或者是单独地利用一种物理或化学现象，从各种对象摄取信息，并把它作为可见的图象记录下来的一种电子技术的总称。而且，还往往把利用光的场合，叫做“电子照相”、“电子记录”，把不用光的场合，叫做“静电记录”等来加以区别。另外，将这种工艺用于印刷技术中进行大量复制的情况下，把它叫做“电子复印”。
