甲酸甲酯，别名蚁酸甲酯，是无色有香味的易挥发液体。与乙醇混溶，溶于甲醇、乙醚。容易水解，潮湿空气中的水分也会使其发生水解。对呼吸道、眼、鼻和下呼吸道有较强的刺激作用，可引起胸部压迫感、呼吸困难。 碳一化学极重要的中间体，具有广泛的用途，可直接用作处理菸草、干水果、谷物等的烟薰剂和杀菌剂；也常用作硝化纤维素、醋酸纤维素的溶剂；在医药上，常用作磺酸甲基嘧啶、磺酸甲氧嘧啶、镇咳剂美沙芬等药物的合成原料。
