The recent research progress of methylxanthine alkaloids including caffeine,theophylline,theobromine and 1,3,7,9-tetramethyluric acid(theacrine)on distribution,biosynthesis,catabolism,biotrans-for- mation,analytical determination were reviewed in this paper. The problems of phytochemistry,genetic cloning and seed breeding in tea were also discussed and prospected.
