狭义的生物肥料，是通过微生物生命活动，使农作物得到特定的肥料效应的制品，也被称之为接种剂或菌肥，它本身不含营养元素，不能代替化肥。广义地生物肥料是既含有作物所需的营养元素，又含有微生物的制品，是生物、有机、无机的结合体它可以代替化肥，提供农作物生长发育所需的各类营养元素。化肥和农药的大量应用对于人类而言利弊并存，为兴利除弊，科学家提出了“生态农业”，逐步实现在农田里少使用或不使用化肥和化学杀虫剂，而使用有机生物肥料和采用微生物方法防治病虫害。
