理论研究，是指对社会现象、社会生活的内在联系及其规律的研究。一般包括三个方面：社会学研究的指导理论；社会学本身的理论研究；对种种社会现象研究的具体理论。 在社会学研究中，理论研究与经验研究是相辅相成的，理论研究是经验研究的前提和向导，缺少理论研究，经验研究就很困难，就没有约定俗成的对象、术语、指标、概念和理论依据；经验研究又是对理论研究的补充和检验，丰富、生动的实践活动为理论研究提供新鲜、适时的研究课题，使业已形成的社会学理论得到检验和修正，乃至发展。
