燃料在定容或定压下燃烧时，其产生的热量常分为两个部分：一部分传给周围环境，一部分使燃烧产物加热，温度升高。传给外界的热量越少，燃烧产物的温度越高。当传给外界的热量为零，即实现绝热的完全燃烧时，燃烧产物的温度达到最大值，这时燃烧产物所达到的温度称为绝热论燃烧温度或理论燃烧温度。此处的完全燃烧包括两方面的含义，一方面是指燃料被氧化至最高价氧化物，即充分燃烧；另一方面是指燃料的燃烧率为100%。
