王回，字景深，宋仁宗庆历八年（1048）生，莆田仙游县折桂里汾庄（今榜头镇云庄村）人。开闽王氏在闽中显赫达五十五年，审知裔孙遍八闽，民间俗云：王氏“骑马来，骑马去。”王回曾祖寻，官驾部郎中。寻传子惠，读书能文，俊洁端严，勤俭明敏，官大理寺丞，绰有贤声。惠传子回，廉静好学，少事亲孝，为善节爱，出于至诚。熙宁六年（1073），王回赴京应试，擢余中榜进士，授江陵府松滋县令。邑多淫祠，荆沔俗用人祭鬼，谓之采生，商旅不敢过，民生凋敝，回捕治甚严，其风为之变（见《莆阳比事》引《国朝宝录家传》）。
