20世纪80年代，美国首先报道了一种在猪群中发生的新灾难性疾病（Keffaber，1989，Loula，1991）。其临床表现为母猪严重的繁殖障碍，断奶猪普遍发生肺炎、生长迟缓以及死亡率增加的症状（Hill，1990）。当时该病病因不明，人们通常称其为“神秘病”（MSD）（Hill，1990；Re-otutar，1989）。
