独立电源是二端元件，具有把非电磁能量（如机械能，化学能，光能等）转变成电磁能量的能力。独立电源在电路中能作为激励来激发电路中的响应，即支路电压和支路电流。独立电源分为独立电压源和独立电流源两种类型，简称电压源和电流源。这是两个完全独立、彼此不能替代的理想电源模型。
所以，称之为独立电源（ independent sources）。 不过，有另外一种电源，其输出（电流或电压）是电 路中，某些电压或电流的函数。
