狗宝是生长在狗胃里一种石头样的东西。多呈圆球状或椭圆球状，一般直径1一5厘米，表面呈灰白色或灰黑色，略有光泽，并有多个类圆形突起。质地坚重细腻，指甲一划可见划痕。断面为白色或牙白色，呈同心环状层纹，近中心部较疏松，但多不能分离，气微腥，味微苦，嚼之有粉性而无沙性感觉。传统中医认为具有降逆风、开郁结、解毒之功能。主治胸肋胀满、食道癌、胃癌、反胃、疔疮等，是多种良药的重要原料 。狗宝为我国传统中医药材，自古与牛黄、马宝并誉为"三宝"。
