矿层采出后，采空区顶板岩层内出现悬空，其压力便转移到煤壁上，煤壁承受的压力增加，形成增压区，煤壁在附加荷载的作用下，一部分煤被压碎，并挤向采空区，这种现象称为片帮。 工作面前方的支承压力是煤壁片帮产生的主要原因，不同的煤层条件，包括硬度、节理裂隙发育程度、地质构造发育情况，使不同工作面煤壁片帮形式不同。有的工作面不片帮，有的工作面片帮严重。
