原子或分子吸收一定的能量后，电子被激发到较高能级但尚未电离的状态。激发态一般是指电子激发态，气体受热时分子平动能增加，液体和固体受热时分子振动能增加，但没有电子被激发，这些状态都不是激发态。当原子或分子处在激发态时，电子云的分布会发生某些变化，分子的平衡核间距离略有增加，化学反应活性增大。所有光化学反应都是通过分子被提升到激发态后进行的化学反应，因此光化学又称激发态化学。电离辐射（或电磁辐射）与物质作用中，当转移到原子或分子的能量低于其电离电位而又足以使电子跃迁到较高能级时，原子或分子处于激发态。激发态和基态具有不同的位能曲线和平衡核间距。
