潜科学，是指孕育中的科学，是"科学胚胎"、"科学幼芽"。任何一种科学理论或学说的产生，都必然要经历一个酝酿、孕育和发展的过程，都有一段潜在期或孕育期。 每一门科学在创建初期，往往以科学家头脑中的思想火花、瞬时灵感和科学家想像等形成出现，经过不断筛选、雕琢、组合，向某些难点发起集中思维攻势，终于形成一股定向的思维潜流，推动其跨入科学理论之列，这类似胚胎的个体发育过程。如果把已经成熟并被社会承认的科学称为"显科学"的话，那么，对于那些尚未成熟，还处于幼芽阶段的科学则可称为"潜科学"。
