根据保护器的工作原理，可分为电压型、电流型和脉冲型三种。电压型保护器接于变压器中性点和大地间，当发生触电时中性点偏移对地产生电压，以此来使保护动作切断电源，但由于它是对整个配变低压网进行保护，不能分级保护，因此停电范围大，动作频繁，所以已被淘汰。脉冲型电流保护器是当发生触电时使三相不平衡漏电流的相位、幅值产生的突然变化，以此为动作信号，但也有死区。应用广泛的是电流型漏电保护器，所以下面主要介绍电流型的保护器。
