溪洛渡水电站是国家“西电东送”骨干工程，位于四川和云南交界的金沙江上。工程以发电为主，兼有防洪、拦沙和改善上游航运条件等综合效益，并可为下游电站进行梯级补偿。电站主要供电华东、华中地区，兼顾川、滇两省用电需要，是金沙江“西电东送”距离最近的骨干电源之一，也是金沙江上最大的一座水电站。 装机容量与原来世界第二大水电站——伊泰普水电站（1400万千瓦）相当，是中国第二、世界第三大水电站。2005年底开工，2007年实现截流。2009年3月大坝主体工程混凝土浇筑开工，计划2013年首批机组发电电站在左、右两岸各布置一座地下厂房，各安装9台单机容量77万千瓦的巨型水轮发电机组，总装机1386万千瓦，仅次于三峡水电站和伊泰普水电站。 截至2014年4月溪洛渡左岸电站3号机组结束试运行并完成停机检修，正式投产发电，剩余4台机组正在进行安装调试，将于2014年汛前全部投运。 2014年6月30日21时50分，溪洛渡左岸1号机组结束72小时试运行，进入投产运行状态。至此，溪洛渡水电站所有机组全部投产。
