湿温的病因，是感受湿热病邪。但湿热病邪能否感人，感染后能否发病，还取决于脾胃阳气的胜衰。如饮食不节，饥饱无度，过食生冷而损伤脾胃，则易内湿停聚。特别是在夏秋之节湿盛之季，脾胃之机多较呆滞，尤易导致湿邪内困，在此情况下，外界湿热之邪便易乘虚而入，薛生白说：“太阴内伤，湿饮停聚，客邪再至，内外相引，故病湿热。”
湿温病当更多运用温药，因为湿邪非辛不开、非苦不降、非温不化。
