温差发电是指利用海水的温差进行发电。海洋不同水层之间的温差很大，一般表层水温度比深层或底层水高得多。发电原理是，温水流入蒸发室之后，在低压下海水沸腾变为流动蒸气或丙烷等蒸发气体作为流体，推动透平机旋转，启动交流电机发电；用过的废蒸气进入冷凝室被海洋深层水冷却凝结，再进行循环。据估算，海洋温差能一年约能发电15×108=15亿千瓦。
