活性污泥法是一种污水的好氧生物处理法，由英国的克拉克（Clark）和盖奇（Gage）约在1913年于曼彻斯特的劳伦斯污水试验站发明并应用。如今，活性污泥法及其衍生改良工艺是处理城市污水最广泛使用的方法。它能从污水中去除溶解性的和胶体状态的可生化有机物以及能被活性污泥吸附的悬浮固体和其他一些物质，同时也能去除一部分磷素和氮素，是废水生物处理悬浮在水中的微生物(micro-organism)的各种方法的统称。
1、好氧活性污泥法 （1）基本原理 活性污泥法（activated sludge）：通过充分曝气供氧， 使大量微生物悬浮在水中，利用它们降解水中有机污染物。 曝气停止后，微生物絮凝体沉淀，使污水净化。
