活化极化(activation polarization)是指由于电极电化学反应迟延而引起其电位偏离平衡电位的现象。又称电化学极化或化学极化，是电极极化的一种基本形式。在低电流密度下容易出现活化极化。阳极活化极化意味着在阳极上进行的电氧化反应难以释放电子，为促使其释放电子，就必须使阳极电位更正于平衡电位。阴极活化极化则是在阴极上进行的电还原反应难以吸收电子，为促使其吸收电子，就必须使阴极电位更负于平衡电位。
而对于管式SOFC，阴极欧姆损失占总电压损失的比例最大，其次为活化极化损失，两者之和占总损失达85％。
