洪家渡水电站位于贵州西北部黔西、织金两县交界处的乌江干流上，是乌江水电基地11个梯级电站中唯一对水量具有多年调节能力的“龙头”电站，电站大坝高179.5米，坝址以上控制流域面积 9900平方公里，多年平均径流量48.9亿立方米。水库总库容49.47亿立方米，调节库容33.61亿立方米。电站安装3台立轴混流式水轮发电机组，装机总容量60万千瓦。工程总投资49.27亿元。于2000年11月8日正式开工建设，2001年10月15日实现截流，2004年底三台机组全部并网发电。
