热力学中，在绝热过程中只要熵增加，过程中必然存在着有用能的损失。这种机械能的损失，可以作如下的解释：当超音速气流绕过物体流动时，产生激波，熵增加，速度降低，动量减小，因而必有作用在气流上与来流方向相反的力，即阻滞气流的阻力；另一方面，对于激起激波的物体，也必然受到与上述作用力大小相等而与来流方向相同的反作用力，即流体作用在物体上的阻力。这种与摩擦无关但由激波产生的阻力。称为波阻。波阻的大小取决于激波的强度，激波越强，波阻越大。
