波片是能使互相垂直的两光振动间产生附加光程差 （ 或相位差）的光学器件。通常由具有精确厚度的石英、方解石或云母等双折射晶片做成，其光轴与晶片表面平行。以线偏振光垂直入射到晶片，其振动方向与晶片光轴夹 θ 角（ θ≠0、 ），入射的光振动分解成垂直于光轴（o 振 动）和平行于光轴（e振动）两个分量，它们对应晶片中的 o光和e光（见双折射）。
该方案通过激光光源、线性起偏器、可旋转的1/4波片(QWP)和可旋转的1/2波片(HWP)的组合实现任意偏振态(SOP)的产生。利用二维平面几何方法,从理论上分析了该方案的正确性并推导出了相应的控制算法。
