沙船是中国古代用于航海的一种防沙平底木船。出现于唐代。首先在今江苏崇明一带使用。宋代称“防沙平底船”。元代称“平底船”。明代通称为“沙船”。10世纪初，中国沙船远航到爪哇。15世纪郑和七次下西洋，有大队的沙船随航。沙船载重量，小的250—400吨，中等500—800吨，元代海运大沙船达1200吨以上。清道光 (1821—1850)时上海沙船约3000艘，估计当时全国共有10000艘以上。
