沙州即今甘肃省敦煌市，敦煌四周皆为沙漠戈壁包围，位处塔克拉玛干沙漠东端边缘。沙漠地带气候干燥，气温变化大，地面缺少经常性流水，植物稀少矮小，为风沙地貌。沙漠多集中在鸣沙山地带和党河两岸及其下游地带。地面物质主要由沙粒构成，地表覆盖大片流沙，广布沙丘，在风力推动下沙丘移动，往往造成严重危害。全市有沙漠765万多亩，占总面积的16.36%，所以敦煌又有“沙漠绿洲”之称。
