水粉颜料多数较不透明，由粉质的材料组成，用胶固定，覆盖性比较强。所以画水粉的时候经常会从最深的颜色下笔。 水粉颜料可以一层层盖上去。如果有耐心的话也可以画到油画一样的效果，不过颜料湿的时候颜色比较深，干了颜色变浅。还有带紫色的比如玫瑰红，紫罗兰这些颜色容易翻出来。所以不用来打底。水粉颜料色粒很细，跟水溶了之后颜色很漂亮，但不能覆盖底色。水彩颜料的群青、赭石、土红等色属矿物性颜料，单独使用或与别的色相混都易出现沉淀现象。
