母系，是指“血统属于母亲方面的”。母系社会又称母系氏族制社会。氏族社会的早、中期为母系氏族，即建立在母系血缘关系上的社会组织，是按母系计算世系血统和继承财产的氏族制度，是氏族社会的第一阶段。
