橡胶助剂引起源于天然橡胶的硫化。经过八十多年的研究，直到20世纪20～30年代，随着硫化促进剂的基本品种2-巯基苯并噻唑及其次磺酰胺衍生物以及对苯二胺类防老剂的工业化，橡胶助剂才基本形成体系。橡胶助剂处于稳定时期，硫化促进剂和防老剂两类主要有机助剂的产量大约为生胶消耗量的 4%。国外橡胶助剂的生产相当集中，联邦德国的拜耳股份公司和美国的孟山都公司是最主要的生产厂家。中国橡胶助剂（指有机助剂）的生产始于1952年。
