人们根据部分观测，设想研究对象的大体轮廓。从而提出一个模型，它在某方因反应了对象的特征，然而这个模型是否真的近乎实际，还有待于更多实验来检验。这类实验就是模型实验。1910年，卢瑟福等人以a粒子束注射金属时发现，有些粒子轨道发生大角度散射，因而悟出了可能有原核的存在，于是提出了原核的行星系模型，然后用数学方法散射所应遵循定律，并发现沿一定角度散射的粒子数目应同散射箔的厚度、同原子核电荷平方成正比，同速度的四次方成反比。
