轨距是铁路轨道两条钢轨之间的距离（以钢轨的内距为准）。国际铁路协会在1937年制定1435mm为标准轨（等于英制的4呎8½ 吋），世上大约百分之六十的铁路的轨距是标准轨。这轨距又称标准轨距或国际轨距。比标准轨宽的轨距称为宽轨，比标准轨窄的称为窄轨。双轨距铁路或多轨距铁路铺有三或四条钢轨，让使用不同轨距的列车都可行驶。
标准轨（standard gauge） 标准轨由英国乔治史蒂芬逊所创，轨道宽度由铁路内侧量起约 1.435 公尺（4 呎 8.5 吋），为美国、澳洲、中东与西欧国家所采用。
