极限星等(M)：望远镜所能看到最暗的星等称为极限星等。正常视力的人，在黑暗、空气透明的场合最暗可以看到六等星，而口径70mm的望远镜的集光力是肉眼的100倍，它就能看到比六等星再暗五个星等的11等星。望远镜的口径远大於肉眼，自然能看到更暗的星等。极限星等的计算公式是M=1.77+5lgD。例如：口径70mm的望远镜，极限星等是M=1.77+5lg70=11.0（等）。
