极限荷载即引起结构“完全崩溃”的荷载,一种观点认为:极限荷载是结构或构件所能承受的最大的荷载,而非极限位移对应的荷载。 传统的强度设计以构件最大工作应力乘以安全系数不大于材料的屈服应力为依据,一般情况下,构件某截面开始屈服(或者局部屈曲)并不代表结构完全破坏,结构所承受的荷载通常较构件开始屈服(或者局部屈曲)时的荷载为大,为了利用这一强度富裕度,提出了极限设计和极限荷载的概念。
