极核是绿色开花植物特有的，是被子植物胚囊的结构之一,指植物胚珠内的胚囊中央的两个核，也是伴随卵细胞形成的，每个极核各含有正常体细胞一半的染色体。受精后形成的受精极核发育成胚乳，双子叶植物的受精极核不发育。
随着核分裂的进行,胚囊沿长轴方向显著地扩大,随后,两极的每端各有1 个核,移向中央,互相靠拢,这二个核称为极核(polar nucleus)。 接着在各细胞核之间形成细胞壁,分别形成细胞。
