主要分布于沅陵县境东半部，西北及西南部也有少量出露，面积约17002，是县境内最古老的地层。厚度巨大，岩性特殊，韵律发育变质明显，属浅海相沉积的泥沙质岩系。依据岩性区域变质程度和接触关系，可划分为上、下两个亚群。
其地层为板溪群二云母片岩。
而神农架群、板溪群、下江群与丹洲群，均属毗邻区地台之第一个盖层。
Shennongjia Group, Banxi Group, Xiajiang Group and Danzhou Group all belong to the first cover of Yangtze platform.
矿床的形成是在板溪群矿源层的基础上，经构造—变质作用的改造富集而成。
The deposits were formed on the foundation of the source beds of Banxi Group through reworking and enrichment of structural metamorphism.
