本主崇拜是白族独有的一种宗教信仰。本主又叫本主神，白语称“武增”，又称“老谷”（男性始祖）、“老太”（女性始祖），各地还有“武增尼”、“增尼”、“东波”等。这些称呼有祖先和主人的含义，但并不是单纯的祖先崇拜。一般认为，本主崇拜源于原始社会社神的崇拜和农耕祭祀。它在南诏时期即已形成，并且是南诏、大理国时期白族的一种重要的宗教信仰。以后又历经数百年的发展，本主数量不断增加，文化内容越发丰富，才形成如今的本主崇拜格局。
