本主崇拜是白族独有的一种宗教信仰。本主又叫本主神,白语称“武增”,又称“老谷”(男性始祖)、“老太”(女性始祖),各地还有“武增尼”、“增尼”、“东波”等。这些称呼有祖先和主人的含义,但并不是单纯的祖先崇拜。一般认为,本主崇拜源于原始社会社神的崇拜和农耕祭祀。它在南诏时期即已形成,并且是南诏、大理国时期白族的一种重要的宗教信仰。以后又历经数百年的发展,本主数量不断增加,文化内容越发丰富,才形成如今的本主崇拜格局。
