有机汞化合物的毒性较无机汞（氯化汞口服中毒量为0.5g，致死量1-2g）为大。人经口误服氯化乙基汞在3mg/kg.bw左右即重度中毒。因有机汞在细胞内抑制巯基，故使细胞色素氧化酶、琥珀酸氧化酶、琥珀酸、乳酸和葡萄糖脱氢酶以及过氧化酶皆失去活力，影响细胞呼吸系统，受影响的部位主要在神经系统组织。
