在击数一定时，当含水率较低时，击实后的干密度随着含水率的增加而增大；而当含水率达到某一值时，干密度达到最大值，此时含水率继续增加反而招致干密度的减小。干密度的这一最大值称为最大干密度，与它对应的含水率称为最优含水率。
