施食是布施饮食的意思。佛教中流行的施食，一般是指布施给饿鬼道众生。施食又叫蒙山施食，此外还有特殊的施食方法叫烟供、药供、火供、水供。 施食主要依据两本佛经，一本是《佛说施饿鬼甘露味大陀罗尼经》，一本是《佛说救拔焰口饿鬼陀罗尼经》。另外在盂兰盆节那一天进行放焰口放蒙山的仪式，其来源是《佛说盂兰盆经》。
