新闻传播学的历史相对年轻，19世纪与20世纪之交新闻学在德国和美国形成学科，20世纪40年代传播学在美国形成学科。新闻学在中国作为一门学科，以及中国新闻学教育的开端，通常以1918年10月北京大学新闻学研究会的成立作为标志；而1978年7月复旦大学新闻系的刊物《外国新闻事业资料》首次公开介绍传播学，通常被视为中国传播学研究的起点。现在“新闻传播学”在中国列为一级学科，下设新闻学、传播学、广播电视学、广告学、编辑出版学五个二级学科。
