文学理论是指研究有关文学的本质、特征、发展规律和社会作用的原理、原则的一门学科。是文艺学的一个门类。传统的习惯把文艺学分成三个门类：文学理论、文学史和文学批评。它们都以文学为研究对象，都要求把历史的、现实的文学理论与文学史和逻辑的研究结合起来。文学史重在对文学的历史研究；文学批评重在对文学的现实研究；文学理论则重在对文学作逻辑的研究。从古往今来的文学现象中，找出文学的本质和规律，揭示文学的不同形态的特点。
