Redfiled（1936）定义：当不同文化群体的人们进行持续不断的直接接触时，一方或双方的原文化类型所产生的变化称为文化适应。Berry (1990) 提出一个 文化适应模型，将文化适应分为四个类型：同化（assimilation）， 分离（separation），融合（integration），边缘化（marginalization);并且在研究文化适应过程中个体所面临的问题时提出了一个双维度文化适应模型，将少数族群在文化适应过程中的问题归纳为1）是否保持和发展源文化的特征特性；2）是否倾向于同主导社会进行跨族群的交流来评估和建立一个积极的关系。
