探测深度又称“勘探深度”，指电阻率法的探测深度。它取决于如下条件：①被探测地质体本身的因素，如：大小、形状、埋深及与围岩的电阻率差别；②供电电极距(AB)的大小，③观测精度，④地形和不均匀体的干扰；⑤外来电场的干扰。如不考虑后面两个因素，其探测深度主要取决于前三个因素。
横向探测深度是指某一探测器测量的结果在横向上主要受多大范 围内介质的影响(贡献50%~90%)，简称探测深度(investigation depth)或探测范围。
