悲观主义泛指对宇宙、社会、人生悲观失望的态度、观点和理论。与“乐观主义”相对。源于拉丁文pessimiis，意谓“最坏的”。作为一种世界观和人生观，认为世界变幻无常，人注定要遭受苦难，因而陷入悲观绝望，甚至认为生不如死，企图超越现实，以求解脱和获得拯救。作为一种伦理观，往往持道德退化论。认为恶总占优势，善毫无意义，道德价值在于灭绝欲望。通常是失去了历史存在价值的某些社会集团或没落阶级的世界观、人生观和伦理观。
